Position Title:             Academic Coach (Arabic)

Supervisor:                 Director of Resettlement

Status:                         Full-time, hourly, non-exempt, $13.50/hour

Journey’s End Refugee Services, Inc. is a refugee resettlement and immigration services provider for the Western New York Region. Journey’s End works to assist newly arriving refugees to find gainful employment and avoid dependency on social services

 Project Description:

The Refugee School Impact Program is a partnership between Journey’s End Refugee Services and the Buffalo Public Schools Multilingual Department. The project aims to support children and families within the Buffalo Public Schools in order to achieve their academic goals. This goal is primarily held up by the role that the Academic Coaches play as a bridge between parents and schools.

Job Description:

The Academic Coach serves as a liaison between the Buffalo Public Schools and refugee parent community. The coaches are responsible for classroom academic support, parent informational sessions, school orientation, and other community outreach efforts.

Primary Responsibilities:

Academic support: 

-Assist students by sight translating documents and interpreting in the classroom.

-Assist in planning and coordinating mini-academies and summer camp program.

-Assist multilingual department

-On call for other services

Communication assistance for parents and schools: 

-Interpret for parent meetings, parent/teacher conferences, trainings, school orientations, open houses, parent nights, and communicating notifications through phone alert system.
-Interpret and provide support to District Committees in regards to parent concerns.
-Help parents understand the purpose of education services provided by schools and community 

Recruitment/Enrollment/Registration:

-Help parents with school registration and guidance in school selection process
-Assist parents with special school applications
-Help parents with school transfer process
-Case notes on a daily basis

Other Crisis intervention:

-Assist with emergency situations, busing issues, and go to home visits with social worker
-Work with parents in enrolling children in Refugee School Impact Program and maintain case notes on children enrolled in program.
-Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

-Fluent and literate in English as well as Arabic
-Experience working with the refugee population or in a diverse classroom environment.
-Possess the ability to be flexible, creative, and willing to collaborate with other teachers.
