Supervisor: Green Shoots for New Americans Program Manager

Status: Part-time, hourly, 13-hours per week, temporary/seasonal; $14.00 per hour, April through October

Journey’s End Refugee Services, Inc. is a refugee resettlement and immigration services provider for the Western New York Region. Journey’s End works to assist newly arriving refugees to find gainful employment and avoid dependency on social services. 

Job Description

The Community Garden & Outreach Assistant will assist the Program Manager in increasing the community involvement and capacity of the Green Shoots for New Americans program. This individual will provide support for refugee clients and community members who are interested in accessing fresh vegetables or gardening spaces. The work schedule for this position is somewhat flexible, but interested candidates should have availability during normal business hours. Occasional evening and weekend work should be expected. This position is seasonal, running from April through October.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist with hands-on maintenance of the Brewster Street Farm and the Green Shoots community garden 
  • Organize and run a weekly CSA distribution, farm stand, and outside farmers markets 
  • Supervise volunteers and students working on the farm and in the community garden 
  • Plan and carry out community garden workshops and events 
  • Assist refugee clients in gaining access to gardening spaces in and around the City of Buffalo 
  • Maintain social media pages for the Green Shoots for New Americans program

Required Skills/Experience

  • Gardening and/or agricultural work experience
  • Capable of completing predetermined tasks independently
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Experience organizing group projects and effectively managing volunteers
  • Prior experience working with refugee, immigrant, and minority populations
  • Experience working with English Language Learners; Foreign language skills and cross-cultural experience a plus
  • Ability to work outside in occasionally adverse weather conditions
  • Positive attitude and sense of humor

 Desired Qualifications

  • Some training, coursework, or related experience in the fields of agriculture, biology, ecology, natural resource management, social justice, environmental justice, or community organizing
