Status:                         Full-time, salary, exempt-professional; $60,000 - $65,000

Journey’s End Refugee Services, Inc. is a refugee resettlement and immigration services provider for the Western New York Region. Journey’s End works to assist newly arriving refugees to find gainful employment and avoid dependency on social services. 


Job Description

The Director of Finance will be a strategic advisor and business partner to the Executive Director, the Treasurer and other members of the senior leadership team. S/he will lead and mentor a small team to: align long-term and short-term financial strategy; provide precise financial data and insightful analyses; ensure reporting, policies and procedures are tailored to the needs of the diverse entities; and ensure overall fiscal rigor, sustainability, and alignment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with Executive Director, Treasurer, board members, finance team, finance/audit committees, and advisors to set and monitor financial goals, plans and capacity for the various departments and stakeholders.
  • Preparation of financial statements and reporting.
  • Partner closely with the Board Finance and Audit Committees; act as the primary financial interface with the full Board.
  • Participate in annual and long-term resource allocation planning with the Executive Director.
  • Review and analyze various monthly and quarterly financial statements.
  • Monitor liquidity needs.  
  • Ensure that outside audits are scheduled, and any resulting findings addressed. 
  • Partner with financial and legal consultants to ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements and to ensure that big picture goals are communicated and implemented effectively. 
  • Refine and continually develop efficient and effective systems and processes. 
  • Streamline/simplify financial statements and reports. 
  • Manage and mentor the finance team, instilling a strong team dynamic and taking ownership for the professional development of colleagues. 
  • Proactively collaborate across all entities. 
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Skills/Experience

  • Deep expertise in financial control, analysis, budgeting and reporting
  • Experience with philanthropy including private operating foundations, private foundations, public charities, and donor advised funds. Further experience with disqualified persons, prohibited transactions and activities, and all related accounting and legal requirements
  • Prior experience working with a Board of Directors and committees
  • Substantial experience working with Quickbooks Enterprise/Nonprofit/Pro
  • Advanced MS Excel skills 


Desired Qualifications

  • Professional qualifications to include a minimum of a bachelor's degree and 7 years of related experience, or a master's degree (MBA desirable) and/or CPA designation with 5 years of related experience. 
  • Ideal professional experience includes: previous financial work in a medium sized nonprofit in a supervisory role.
