Liberty Defense Project Attorney (Southern Tier)

Liberty Defense Project Attorney Job Description

Journey’s End Refugee Services
Immigration Legal Services Program

Agency Description:

Journey’s End is a §501(c)(3) not-for-profit refugee resettlement agency in Buffalo, New York. We are a community-based organization with the mission of providing refugees and immigrants with the resources and support they need to become successful, active and contributing members of our shared community. The Immigration Legal Services (ILS) Program offers immigration legal services to immigrant New Yorkers in need, including representation on matters before U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) and Buffalo Immigration Court.

Project Description:

The New York State Liberty Defense Project (LDP) was launched by Governor Cuomo in 2017 to ensure that immigrant New Yorkers can access the full protections they are afforded under the law. Many individuals facing deportation who are in need of urgent and free legal assistance include lawful permanent residents, asylum seekers and refugees, victims of domestic violence, and other vulnerable New Yorkers. To create the capacity to provide a regional rapid response to address the urgent legal need of any immigrant, as well as provide support to families of those affected, the New York State Office for New Americans (ONA) will expand the availability of immigration attorneys in all regions of the state to offer free and expert assistance and direct representation under the LDP.

Job Description:

Reporting to the Supervising Attorney, the LDP immigration attorney will carry out LDP grant objectives and will work to advance the mission of Journey’s End Refugee Services. The LDP immigration attorney will provide outreach, direct immigration legal services, Know Your Rights trainings, and case management services to the immigrant population of the Southern Tier. The Southern Tier region includes Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Delaware, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins Counties. This position will primarily operate out of Binghamton, NY.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide direct affirmative and defensive immigration legal representation to the immigrant populations of the Southern Tier.
  • Provide an immediate response to urgent requests for immigration assistance throughout the region.
  • Provide Know Your Rights trainings and other workshops throughout the Southern Tier on relevant immigration topics determined by the immigrant community.
  • Develop, sustain, and grow meaningful partnerships with local community groups to organize, host, and conduct outreach for Know Your Rights trainings and other workshops.
  • Provide referrals to appropriate internal agency programs or partner agencies to meet law-related and other needs to family members of deported individuals or those in removal proceedings.
  • Conduct widespread community outreach and coordinate with other ONA projects, including participation in monthly New York State Department of State/ONA webinars.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Applicants must:

  • Be admitted and remain in good standing of the bar of the highest court of any state in the country or U.S. territory
  • Possess enthusiasm to work on a dynamic and fast-paced Rapid Response Project
  • Be able and willing to travel extensively to counties throughout the Southern Tier
  • Be able and willing to travel to Buffalo, NY when necessary as part of client representation or as required by supervisor
  • Be able and willing to travel to Journey’s End’s office in Buffalo, NY for mandatory staff training and events
  • Possess ability to be part of a dedicated team of talented individuals
  • Possess strong communication (written and oral) and advocacy skills
