Community Outreach Workforce Initiative Intern

Hours Required:

10-15 hours per week for 3 months. Hours available between 9-5 M-F.

Position Description:

The Community Outreach Workforce Initiative Intern will work with our NYS Office for New Americans (ONA) Immigrant Community Navigator, to provide program support and assistance in carrying out daily tasks. The Focus of the ONA Immigrant Community Navigator is to connect low-income New American residents in the WNY Region to economic, social, and civic support. Activities include Immigration Integration roundtables, outreach & impact days, community navigator trainings, community conversations, volunteer recruitment and a region-wide research report on workforce integration issues amongst refugees & immigrants.

Responsibilities include community outreach & marketing: sharing upcoming events, creating posters, flyers, etc; distributing posters and marketing materials to appropriate communities; talking with business owners/organizations/community leaders about upcoming events; sitting in on committee meetings/refugee roundtable discussions/workshops and  taking minutes, helping with sign-in sheet & set up etc; support ONA in finding research reports on workforce development issues & initiatives; outreach to various counties under ONA Grant; brainstorming and researching community outreach and impact day opportunities.

This position is located both within the Journey’s End office at the Tri-main Building (2495 Main St #530, Buffalo, NY 14214) & at various locations on the West Side of Buffalo. This is an unpaid internship. A portion of the intern's time will be dedicated to their personal educational development including a thorough training in Journey's End and its mission.

Requirements:

  • Current graduate or undergraduate student.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Professionalism, dependability, confidentiality, and punctuality
  • An interest in the daily functioning of non-profit organizations
  • An interest in Buffalo's refugee and immigrant population
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google applications

Ideal candidates will possess the following:

  • A car and valid driver’s license and a willingness to drive on behalf of the agency, possibly transporting clients. Interns are responsible for knowing their own university or college rules and restrictions regarding internships. Mileage and parking fees are reimbursed.

Intern will gain:

  • Exciting experience for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the non-for-profit field, marketing, community outreach/organizing, and or working with the refugee/immigrant population in WNY.
  • Exposure to and experience with event planning.
  • Professional feedback and guidance.

Journey’s End supervisor will:

  • Communicate with intern about learning goals and outcomes.
  • Train and evaluate intern.
  • Provide proof of attendance, if needed.
